New Speed Cameras to target motorbike riders

NEW CAMERA: WA Police have rolled out their new weapon in the fight to reduce the road toll, a camera that photographs vehicles from the front and back - leaving motorcyclists such as this now readily identified to police.

IT'S D-Day for WA motorbike riders - with police today launching their new weapon in the fight against speeding and dangerous driving.
The new Vitronic dual-lens digital camera, which is part of the State Government’s $30million enhanced speed enforcement program, will take front and rear photos of vehicles, meaning irresponsible motorcycle riders will now have their number plates photographed..

And it can identify more speeding drivers, particularly those who have been able to evade cameras such as motorcyclists and overtaking motorists.
Police and Road Safety Minister Rob Johnson said the new cameras would play an important role in ensuring motorists travelled at safer speeds.

“The new dual-lens digital cameras will take front and rear photos of vehicles, meaning irresponsible motorcycle riders will now have their number plates photographed," he said today.

“The camera will also be able to recognise the speed of up to four vehicles in the frame and identify each vehicle that is speeding. In the past this was not possible, allowing some motorists to avoid infringement in cases where it could not be determined which vehicle was speeding.
“My message to motorists is simple; speeding fines are a voluntary tax - don’t speed and you won’t have to pay.
“Individuals need to realise that when they choose to speed, they are risking their own life and the lives of other road users.”

The Vitronic dual-lens digital cameras are part of a new fleet of cameras, which include digital speed and red-light cameras, and hand-held cameras.
WA Police expect the cameras to be fully operational by the end of June.
