Applying for a Western Australian Driver's Licence
From www.dpi.wa.gov.au

January 01, 2007

Overseas drivers intending to take up permanent residence in WA are not considered visitors and therefore need to apply for a WA driver's licence within three months of arrival.

In the past drivers that held a licence from another country only needed to pass the road rules theory test. In an effort to ensure all drivers are safe and hold a legitimate drivers licence, drivers wanting to transfer their overseas licence to a WA licence will be required to pass the road rules theory test as well as a practical driving assessment, unless the overseas licence was issued by a ‘recognised country’.

Recognised countries are:

Austria
Belgium
Canada
Croatia
Denmark
Finland
France
Germany
Greece
Ireland
Isle of Man
Italy
Japan
Luxembourg
Malta
Netherlands
New Zealand
Norway
Portugal
Singapore
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland
United Kingdom
United States of America

These strict rules will help make our roads safer as it will ensure that all drivers are legitimate drivers licence holders.
